Origins of Korean Birthday Celebrations

To understand the origins of Korean birthday celebrations, we need to look back at the country's history. The first part of the word gwallye (coming-of-age ceremony) means "hat." After this ceremony, a boy was considered an adult and could wear a hat in public.

Gwan Rye: The Modern Coming-of-Age Ceremony

Every third Monday of May, Korean men and women around 20 years old participate in Gwan Rye, the modern coming-of-age ceremony. During the ceremony, participants wear traditional Korean clothing called hanboks and participate in a variety of activities, including a tea ceremony and a speech by a respected elder.
